Tips for Planning a Great RV Trip Route

Pick your destination. Start with an endpoint, a midpoint if you are looping, or simply a region to explore. Provincial tourism websites are full of road trip suggestions.

Look for the scenic route. An alternate road usually beats the main one for scenery and for the places you find along it. It takes longer, which is rather the point — just check that the secondary highway is RV-friendly before you commit to the detour.

Make a list of things to see and do. Historical landmarks, viewpoints, towns, parks. Write down everything that catches your interest.

Narrow down your list. Keep the things you are most enthusiastic about and that fit the time you actually have.

Create a timeline. Give more days to the places that reward a longer stay, and shorter driving days to the stretches that do not. Decide your overnight stops deliberately.

Leave space for the unexpected. An over-scheduled trip has no room in it for the parts you will remember.

Book ahead. Reserve campsites where you can, read the ratings first, and check the local regulations if you plan to boondock.
